DIFFERENT GROOVES

Sin dai primi secondi un white noise mi fa venire alla mente un album pubblicato nello scorso inverno intitolato “You Are Eternity”, quello che sto ascoltando non può essere che il nuovo release dei Dadub in uscita su Stroboscopic Artefacts a novembre, “Untitled”. In apertura “Mistresses March” non fa sentire minimamente il peso dei suoi 11 minuti, in tutta la sua durata un pattern di cassa statico ed una audace elaborazione di synths, fx e suoni ambientali (con qualche tratto più rude) creano un sound a dir poco ipnotico. Strano ma vero troviamo pure dei pezzi frutto di due collaborazioni; “Kykeon” creata con Nicola Buono e Lino Monaco a.k.a. Retina.it abbandona parzialmente alcuni elementi caratteristici dei Dadub aprendosi a nuovi orizzonti, si fa ampiamente notare ed apprezzare un pad assai orecchiabile accompagnato da un insieme di strumenti che suonano più puliti e definiti, questa traccia dotata di un maggiore charme sarà sicuramente più suonabile ed adattabile in molti contesti rispetto alle altre tracks presenti nel release. Gran chiusura con “Ergot Kernel”, composta con Daniele de Santis (Grün). Seppur riutilizzando alcune parti della loro formula stilistica, Daniele A. e Giovanni C. riescono a dar sfogo alla loro creatività esprimendosi con una miscela di suoni decisamente più industriali ed avvolti da un alone più oscuro. Ebbene si, anche questa volta i Dadub sono riusciti a dare una svolta, il loro stile continua ad evolversi, sperimentando e percorrendo nuove vie, e senza indugi guarda avanti verso il futuro.

Greek mythology inspires Dadub’s return to the EP format with a new three track release.

Released earlier this year, Daniele Antezza and Giovanni Conti’s debut album You Are Eternity ‎was largely inspired by the Shaman and their self described ‘sound words’. The duo return to their native Stroboscopic Artefacts with a follow up Untitled EP, which plows a similar thematically entailed path to that album, only this time it’s the ancient Greek goddess (of the harvest) Demeter that inspires these three latest productions. It’s also a milestone release for Stroboscopic Artefacts as the Berlin-based label chalks up 20 releases (not including their Stellate and Monad series), which sees Dadub collaborate with Farmacia901 artist Grün (real name Daniele De Santis) and fellow Italian duo Retina.it, whose last credited release came via respected ambient label Glacial Movements.

Dadub’s four-way collaboration with Retina.it, “Kykeon”, is an EP highlight, with the label saying its production was based around the handmade modular synth system of Retina.it pairing Nicola Buono and Lino Monaco. 2013 has been one of the strongest years to date for SA with the label’s release of Lucy and Speedy J’s Zeitgeber album and the official introductions of Rrose, Kanding Ray and Irish and Italian pairings Lakker and Plaster to the label’s roster.

Stroboscopic Artefacts will release Dadub’s Untitled on November 11.

Este corte se torna más profundo y sinuoso; avanzando entre filigranas analógicas y un toque de dub psicodélico, con cierto aire al sonido Basic Channel, y todo ello basado en el sintetizador modular de Nicola Buono y Lino Monaco.....................

................Kykeon features Retina.it, one of Italy’s oldest experimental/electronic duos, resulting in a 4-man effort. Whilst Mistresses March is a perfect case study of how to use the same elements in 12 minutes, the idea behind of Kykeon is how to build these elements on to each other, minute by minute in order to reach a bright, cacophonic catharsis. Various noise effects swirl around a rhythmic pattern, which might be influenced by some earlier variant of dubstep, but the latter always remains in the background. .....................

STRAY LANDINGS

................Abrasive high-end textures persist through ‘Kykeon’, a collaboration utilising this incredible modular-system designed by another Italian duo, Retina.it. Mysterious, synthesised ambience opens the track, before these rather auspicious textures manoeuvre into darker territories as the track progresses, revealing a cavernous low-end swelling beneath the rolling drums and harshly filtered noise. .....................

THE ELECTRIC UNDEGROUND

.....Dadub + Retina.it’s ‘Kykeon’ leads you down an esoteric yet somehow not a mysterious path. Not as dark as the first track, you slowly find yourself getting lost in the avant garde, but not unpleasant, discord of swirling sound only to find yourself again. Its haunting nature manifests a conscious, brooding quest in soul searching that gets completely under your skin.....

IGLOO MAG

.....“Kykeon” closes things as EP highlight and is the most immediately accessible of the tracks. A driving bass propels skipping off beat kicks as intensely polished sound design illuminates the darkest recesses of the Kykeon trip. Excellent modular synth work (via units built by fellow Italians Retina.it) successfully invoke ancient thoughts through sounds redolent of both past and future. Surprising cerebral work from a duo clearly dedicated to the cause—I look forward to hearing more......
